I need calendar, etc., of course. But also want to be able to write documents (w/passw. preferible). Internet access could be with WiFi, Bluetooth or the network (in case of a smartphone).
Thanks

You can get a xv6700, its had everything, even wifi. The new one is about to come out, its the xv6800. The phone is coming out for most of the carriers. http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2006/12/22/verizon-utstarcom-xv6800-the-cdma-tytn-lives/

This is too loaded a question as it requires what you will be using it for. Handhelds without a key board are for 80 % away from the desk. If you spend more time away consider a key board or thumb board.

Phones tend to be OS short and memory short, not to mention behind the best PDAs.

Palm or low end unit till you get used to the OS or device when you know what you want. 90% of new users will stop using it after a year.

For password protection and SD password protection Look toward Windows CE 6.0. Windows 5.0 does not have SD protection but does have password protection.

Most of the devices can password the document but not encrypt.

I think the Phone Cingular Treo 750 is a great PDA. You can read its features here:
